I want to bring back the name Maxine.
What do you guys think?
I think somehow it lost its luster in the whole Maxi-pad business.
If my baby making days weren’t three rhythm methods to the wind, I’d definitely throw that name into the hat for a girl.
Maybe I’ll even petition the new mothers-to-be to get their heads out of their Bella asses long enough to give good ‘ole I’m-not-just-your-mama’s-maxi-pad Maxine another chance.
Think about the alternative, seven years from now, teachers across America will stand up and say ‘Ok Bella, go sit next to Edward’ and ten million Bellas and twelve villion Edwards will all look around from their seats, scramble around frantically in circles, break out into a cold sweat and then eventually faint dead away in confusion.
The earth might actually shift in that one moment of supreme chaos.
Edward is still cool for a boy though. It is Edward after all….
… Evelyn, Myra, Lydia, Iris, Clare … Vivianne.... I love that name…give another name a chance will ya? Even an old one damn it.
I think some name recycling is due.
How about you?

LOL! :)
How about Finnish names (girls): Liisa, Maija, Kaija, Eveliina, Marjatta, Hannele...
(boys): Mikko, Lasse, Lauri, Veeti, Tommi, Kalevi, Tuomas, Heikki...
cool right?! :)
ps. I'd love you to have Name/URL option to leave a comment...
I wrote about this issue here >
why blogger bloggers are so stubborn?
I agree,
I love the old Standards. Classic Names , Oldies Music, and fried foods. Bring'em all back.
Oh so true!! I'm tried of McKinsey, Jacob, Dylan, Julie, Hunter, and Kate! I have done my part to change the tied...my boys are Knox and Hampton. With thier middle names being Clifton and Gene. Knox was pretty unique until that Anjolena and Brad named one of their twins "Knox". Oh, well my Knox was first!!!
Come by when you can...
My boys have classic names. Jack and Nick (Nicholas). I'm all about classics. My fav name for a girl, if I ever have one, is Kate. Not Kathleen, or Katherine, but Kate. We like the classics in our house.
I love it! I have a great aunt Maxine! I am so glad my name isn't too over done. After my sister was born her name (Emma) became really popular! Then the "Friends' Baby" was named the same as my grandmother, Emma Elizabeth! Then everyone named their baby Emma! I think Farrah and Sophia are really popular right now too.
My dad and my brother are both Edward. I love that name. I do not love how popular stupid movie/book character names are.
Also, there are 8 million Olivias and Emmas running around. What's up with that?!
All through the post I was actually thinking that I might be willing to toss Claire aside to work with Maxine....I like Maxie...it would work well with Little Duck's name. Of course this would require finding a sperm donor and childsupporter...at this juncture in time it seems quite the gargantuan effort so I might just buy a Cabbagepatch doll. Would that work? We could give her all of those names above and even share custody if you want.
I named my daughters Elliott and Hunter. I think I'm pretty cutting edge.
I'd vote for Maxine.
And I'd vote for Marceline the Vampire Queen. My son recently made reference to her and now? I'm intrigued.
I'm gonna hunt her down!
hee hee
team jacob. no, kidding. i like the weird ass names like river, summer, moon unit, dweezil, skye, apple, rain, etc. also i like james. not jimmy, jim, jimbo or jimster, but james.

I'm all for old, classic names. That's what we did with our boys.
I agree. Back to the classics!
I'm yet to run into anyone named Beulah. Or Yvette. And I swear I read somewhere that Douglas used to be a female name. I would name my daughter Douglas in a heartbeat just so I could call her Doug for short! But then I'm twisted like that.
Very funny! I always liked the name Maxie especially after seeing Glenn Close in the movie, Maxie (1985) - hysterical!
If I name my little girl Bella, I hope someone will have the decency to put me out of my misery. Don't tell M this, but I already have a list of names for our future babies. They're all old, Swedish names, and I fully intend to give M very little say in the matter.
Hi Mrs. Blogalot! I like names with a bit of cache! May I suggest Frances aka Fanny to the recyled names list!
My kids have pretty unique names: Sage, Maximus and Harlowe.
This Bella, Edward, Jacob thing is all just way too much for me. I can see naming your kids after literature, but Twilight? I'd rather chew glass.
What about Lurleen? That's a purty name. Darn tootin'.
My son and his wife named their girls, Hannah Rose, Emma Rose, and Abbey Rose. I love the old fashioned names. Bella is pretty, but now being overdone of course. I even like Hortense and would call her Horry for short! My daughter Sheila has adopted the name Fatima and now I call her "Fatty" for short but she's not crazy about it. Too bad, little heifer! Change the name I gave you, will ya?
I love the name Maxine and the Maxine cartoons but wouldn't want my baby to look like her.
Regarding the twelve villion Edwards, are they all illegitimate John Edwards spawns?
Haaa..Yes I love that name...Maxine...its hot and sassy all in one......One of my all time favs is Lily...and guess what ...she has a pad too...my old FB name was Lily Pad.......so together we go...Maxi and Lily ...the pad sistas....!
I like Maxine too! Its definitely a name that will grow with her!
Have a great weekend!
Well it looks like we all agree with you! I love that name. We have a Ryan so far but I was pretty much decided before he was born that was his name no question about it. It was one of those things I knew like I knew the sky was blue.. BUT I do want cool, unique, "old" names for my next kids. I dont want them TOO out there though, some are just odd.
Oh! My bestie is pregnant so Ive been spending a lot of time looking at names lately. She's picked out some awful ones.... Nariko for a girl, and Slade for a boy. Seriously... I'd love me some Bella or Edward right now! lol
Funny and true! I'm a fan of some of the old world names myself. I'd like to bring 'Abigail' to the forefront once more.
Hi there, this is my first visit here and I have to throw my 17 year old daughter's name into the ring: Bronte. Gorgeous name for a gorgeous girl (sorry - got you gagging now, but you know how soppy us parents can get) :-)
Cate
I always loved, loved, LOVED Velma!
Okay, not really. But I've not yet had my coffee and can't think clearly. Thanks to you, though, I'll be pondering the names of old ladies all day, considering which have names in need of recycling.
Thanks. (I think.)
My name is Edward.
:)
Yep, bring back Maxine it just sounds 'spicy'!
Have a great time and a wonderfully blessed Labor Day weekend sweetie!!!
I feel like my name is good b/c I rarely meet other Erins....lol! and as for Bella, I can't believe I chose that name for the protagonist in my last short story! heee hee
Maxibne always makes me think of that funny lady on the greeting cards.
Maxine is a great name. Good on you! I wanted to call my daughter Olive, but everyone I knew pretended to dry-gag, so I ended up calling her Isabella, and as you say, virtually every female kid in the whole world is now called Isabella or Bella
Another thing ...it causes havoc in the playground when you shout Isabella. I have nearly been stampeded... twice. Shit, I should have stuck to my guns and called her Olive.
I love these old names, too. They're so solid, and grounded.
I still love how your blog looks. It's so cool. I am jealous, but will follow you, anyway.
xoxoxo
I think it's interesting how old fashioned names make a comeback. Like Emma and Helen. But God forbid Ethel or Edna come back. They never will. Ever. Those names died with my aunts.
And my daughter (who's 17) has a friend whose name is Maxine. She's called Max or Maxine and I think it's just so cute.
Yeah. Old-fashioned names like Phyllis?
Um, no. I'll pass on Maxine. Instead, how about naming your child iPad?
I'm getting really tired of Reagan and Emily and Madison.
And goofy spelling of simple names!
We almost went for Dorothy... she would've been "Dot".
Audrey!
The name "Maxine" always makes me think of that cranky old broad in the cartoon. I think that name needs to rest for a few more years before making a comeback. But I'm with you on Vivienne.
My mom's name is Arline. Do you know ANYONE with that name? ;)
My mother's name was Arlene. She always went by her middle name Judy.
The only Maxine's I can think of are the cranky woman with the big glasses on greeting cards, love her, and Maxine Nightingale, a spandex wearing pop singer from the 70s. Not that I was a fan or anything, waaay too young. :)
Sick to death of Bella! Bring Maxine back. And Harriet too...
LOL! I dont know if I like the name Maxine...but I love the name Paprika. No, I kid you not. Think that one will catch on?
Lovin the old names as new. Vivianne is a personal fave after reading Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and Little Alters Everywhere.
I would gladly retire Britney, Bethany, Claire (even though I like that name). I would love to see more Charlottes.
You're so right, I hadn't thought of the popularity of Edward and Bella as baby names. I think Maxie should be revisited AND Lola. I love that name but whenever I say that, people make a face and start going all Barry Manilow on me.
Yes, I love old type names. My husband's grandma's name was Vivian. I love that name.
Absolutely! My daughter's name is Mackenzie, but we call her "MAX". It suits her so well. In hindsight, she could have totally pulled-off "Maxine". LOL with that bit about Bella and Edward! Do you think Hortense and Gertrude will ever make a comeback? My two great aunts were Minerva (Minnie) and Annette (Nettie). Now you've got me thinkin...Bertha...Prudence...Hester...
I hadn't really thought about it before, but yes, let's bring back some of those classics. I like the ones you chose!
Just not Helga or Hazel.
Also: The world now has enough girls named Ella.
The end.
My daughter's name is One of the ones you mentioned. She is only 13. No one has her name except the octogerians she meets at the nursing home of her great grandma [who she is name for.] Which is just fine with her. She loves her name.
the first thing i thought when i saw maxine was 'maxi-pad'--i think it's a forward looking thing with naming. it all lies in the potential nickname. virginia (a name i love)= vagina. and if she happens to be friends with a 'maxine' well, that just match in unfortunate nickname heaven.
Vivienne used to be my old 'online personality' - after Viv in pretty woman :)
How about Pearl? Josephine? Mabel?
:p
Ugh. I am so sick of all the Bellas out there! And really, why would any woman want to name her child after some whiny character in an ok novel? It just doesn't make sense to me. I like Lillian and Helen. They are so much better than Bella.
You crack me up! I know a couple of women my age who even got new dogs and named them Bella or Edward. Sad... very, very sad! Yes, please bring back Maxine!
i think you could always get a cat or dog or other pet and name it maxine.
just please don't name anything TAMPON!
My grandmother's name was Ethel, and as much as I loved her I just couldn't find a way to recycle that into a name that wouldn't have my child all Emo in the corner cutting herself one day.
I like where you're going with this!! You know Edward and Bella are fav names of mine!! :)
By the way, you won our 100 Followers giveaway!! So, come check it out on the blog today!!
Hope you're having a great week!
♥Tess
Edward is definitely safe from being "stolen" by girls. LOL. Jordan. Taylor. Even Tyler are now no longer "safe" names for boys since people will need to ask, "Boy or girl?" If I had a girl though I'd definitely give her a name that keeps people guessing. ;-)
if only my uterus wasn't fully retired - I'd go for Josephine! in an effort to soothe my urges, we have a puppy named Orzo (named after my daughter's fav pasta - which I think is good reasoning, don't you?
Swati
I love old names, as is evident in my own daughter's names. I mean, you can't get more old fashioned than Victoria or a Julia Claire. But I have a name I love, too, that I didn't grow fond of until after my baby making days were done. I love the name Ruby. It's old fashioned, yet so utterly sassy. In fact, I wish I was a Ruby. And Maxine is just splendid.
Personally, I would have rather been named Maxine than Holly... especially at Christmas.
Yes!! Bring it back. I vote for Gertrude, Penelope and Odetta while we're at it.
I gave my older daughter a name that I knew would be unique. Well, then the President of the USA had to go on and tell everyone what his kids name were. I hope it doesn't catch on. Claire is my youngest daughter's middle name! It's her 96 year old gma's middle name too. When I think of Maxine, I think of that old lady on the Hallmark cards! Love it!
I love the name Maxie!!!!!!
My grandmas name was Winifred- until she had it legally changed to Rosella (her middle name).. both names are old fashioned... I could get on board for a girl named Freddie ;) or Rosie for that matter.. even Ella...... :)
